강남역 근처에 있는 화실 컨셉의 한 카페에서 Over You 를 듣고 나서 Daughtry를 뒤늦게 정주행하기 시작했다. Nickelback 이후로 선굵은 얼터너티브의 시대는 끝난 것처럼 보이지만, 그래도 가끔 필요할 때가 있다. ‘트렌디’의 총아를 자처하며 온갖 전자 이펙트로 뒤범벅된 노래들만 계속 듣다 보면 더욱 그렇다. 텁텁한 입 안의 백김치 같은 청량감을 준달까…?

‘아메리칸 아이돌 출신’이라는 수식어를 평생 때어낼 수 없을 것 같은 프론트맨 Chris Daughtry 에 대한 의존도가 높긴 하지만, 그렇다고 밴드의 음악적 완성도를 간과해서는 안된다. 대중적이면서도 쉽게 질리지는 않고, 거침과 세련미 사이의 균형감각이 특히 좋다.

이 곡 September 는 도입부의 기타 선율이 주는 차가운 금속성의 감각만으로도 계절을 일깨운다. 비록 지금이 9월은 아니지만, 오늘처럼 미세먼지 없이 석양을 바라볼 수 있는 날이라면 이만한 노래가 없을 것 같다.
